Sick Leave Support

Ill or injured? Your employer will let ASEBP know if you are away from work for more than 14 days.

At this point, you will receive an email from ASEBP that asks you to complete a contact request form. Your answers will provide some initial information about how ASEBP can help with your recovery and/or return to work, including if you require immediate assistance.

Need urgent support? Submit the contact request form to sickleavesupport@asebp.ca. ASEBP will reach out to you as soon as possible.

Between day 21 and 28 of your leave

ASEBP will call you to offer support with your recovery and assistance with preparing for returning to work, unless you have requested more urgent assistance.

This support is available at no cost to you, including if you are over age 65 (and have ASEBP's income replacement benefits, including Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance).

ASEBP can:

  • Provide referrals to medical specialists
  • Request medical tests and occupational assessments
  • Approve additional funds for therapeutic treatments (in some circumstances)
  • Connect you to mental health or substance use services
  • Coordinate a gradual return to work and other medically based accommodation requests with your employer

Yes

ASEBP will work with you and your health care providers to determine what we can do to help, based on your health needs and how you are responding to treatment.

ASEBP may recommend a gradual return to work if your symptoms are improving, and if medically based accommodations are available to help you ease back into a work routine.

ASEBP’s goal is to help you recover, ease back into a work routine, and return to living a full life.

If you are feeling well and your health care provider clears you to return to work:

  1. ASEBP will inform your employer; and
  2. Prepare a return-to-work plan based on medical restrictions and limitations from your health provider.

Your ASEBP contact will check in to inquire how your return to work is progressing and whether you need any additional support.

If your health condition is more complex, ASEBP will guide you through the Extended Disability Benefits application process.

In some cases, ASEBP may recommend that you transition to another leave type.

If you are a teacher or other unionized employee, contact your local representative for any additional support available to you while on sick leave.
