Phishing campaign targeting ASEBP covered members

ASEBP received notice that a phishing attempt is being made on covered members. This phishing campaign is being carried out by a bad actor that is not affiliated with ASEBP in any way.

The subject of these emails is related to benefits being suspended with an urgent message for recipients to click an “activate” button or their account will be terminated. These emails are using a false and misspelled ASEBP logo and originating from an email address that does not end in “@asebp.ca.”

Please use anti-fraud best practices in responding to any and all emails. If a phishing message contains links that you clicked and shared personal information through, you should change your password immediately and contact your IT department.

If you have concerns or questions about your ASEBP account, please contact a benefit specialist at benefits@asebp.ca or call toll free at 1-877-431-4786.

Choosing a beneficiary

The beneficiary (or beneficiaries) you choose is the only person who can receive the proceeds from your Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) plans if you pass away. Here are some things to consider when choosing a beneficiary:

  • If you want your Life Insurance and AD&D proceeds to be divided among multiple individuals, you can choose more than one beneficiary.
  • If you choose a person under 18, you’ll also need to appoint a trustee.
  • You can change your beneficiary at any time without their consent.
  • If you haven’t chosen a beneficiary, or if they pass away before you, your Life Insurance and AD&D proceeds will be paid to your estate.

When you enrol in Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan (ASEBP) benefits, you are asked to designate your beneficiary(ies) by completing an Appointment of Beneficiary(ies) form with your employer. If you are unsure who you named as your beneficiary(ies), we recommend you complete a new form. Alternatively, you can talk to your employer about accessing your original form.

As there can be legal implications with designating a beneficiary, you may want to consider consulting a lawyer before making your decision.

Updating your beneficiaries

To update your beneficiary information, please complete a new Appointment of Beneficiary(ies) form.

If you’re an employee actively at work or on a leave of absence, please submit your form directly to your employer.

If you're an early retiree, participating in the Supplemental Package, Retirement Incentive for Teachers and Employees (RITE) recipient or are collecting Extended Disability Benefits but are no longer employed by your employer, please submit your Appointment of Beneficiary(ies) form directly to us.
