Improved Coordination with Multiple Dental Coverage Plans

  • ASEBP News
May. 28, 2025

Starting July 1, 2025, ASEBP is improving how dental claims are coordinated across two benefit plans. This enhancement allows both plans to work together more effectively, helping reduce out-of-pocket costs while continuing to follow existing benefit limits.

What’s Changing?

Currently, when a claim is submitted under both plans, the primary plan pays first. If the claim has already reached frequency or maximum limits under the primary plan, the secondary plan often doesn’t provide additional reimbursement, even when a small balance remains.

Beginning July 1, 2025, the secondary ASEBP plan will be able to cover any remaining eligible balance, provided:

  • The total amount paid between both plans does not exceed the billed amount or ASEBP’s fee guide, and
  • The frequency and maximum limits (e.g., number of visits, or covered units per year) are not exceeded across both plans.

What This Means for You

  • If you have access to two dental plans, eligible claims may now be covered more fully, reducing your out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Coverage limits remain unchanged. This change simply improves how the two plans coordinate within those limits.

Example: Dentist Visit with 2 ASEBP plans

You and your partner have ASEBP benefits as your primary plans, and you visit the dentist for a regular check-up. The dentist bills 1 full unit of polishing at $74.40.

  • Your ASEBP plan would update to cover ½ unit (half unit) and pay up to the eligible $35.77 under the current ASEBP fee guide

  • If you are covered on your partner’s ASEBP plan, their plan would also update to cover ½ unit and pay up to the eligible $35.77 as each plan would allow payment up to the cost of ½ unit

  • As the patient, you would pay the remaining $2.86 to your dentist office

  • You as the member would still be responsible for the amount left over from the combined coverage; however, this change helps reduce unnecessary out-of-pocket expenses when coordinating between two ASEBP plans.
