ASEBP added Spikevax (Moderna) and Comirnaty (Pfizer) COVID-19 vaccines to the Drug Benefit List as of September 18, 2025.
This means that if your ASEBP plan includes drug coverage, you may be eligible for reimbursement for your and your dependants’ COVID-19 vaccine based on your plan coverage maximums and provided you submit the proper receipt.
Navigating your options
ASEBP understands the COVID-19 vaccine approach in Alberta may be confusing for covered members and is here to guide you through the process.
COVID-19 vaccines will be available through public health clinics and participating community pharmacies. Each option has important differences relating to eligibility, cost, appointment booking, and claim process.
Please review both options to determine which is better for you and your dependants.
Option 1: Public Health Clinic
Step 1: Check before you go
First, log into your My ASEBP account to see if you have extended healthcare coverage.
- Navigate to the Benefits tab and open.
- Under General Health Coverage, check to see if Extended Healthcare Coverage is listed as active (under status).
- This section will also tell you what Plan number you have and if you have the individual or family plan.
- Coverage varies by Plan number. Review the Vaccine tab on ASEBP’s drug coverage page to find out how much your plan covers.
Before you pay out-of-pocket, check to see if you or your dependants qualify for a free COVID-19 vaccine by visiting the Government of Alberta’s website and reviewing the eligible underlying medical and immunocompromising conditions. Vaccines administered through a public health clinic are free of charge for teachers as per the collective agreement. Teachers do not have to have a pre-existing condition to be eligible for a free COVID vaccine.
- If you are not eligible for free coverage, the COVID-19 vaccine will still be available to all Albertans for $100 per dose through public health clinics.
- ASEBP will reimburse you to your coverage maximums if your plan includes drug coverage and provided you submit the proper receipt.
Step 2: Book your appointment
If you did not pre-order your COVID-19 vaccine by the September 30th deadline, you can still book an appointment at bookvaccine.alberta.ca.
- Free COVID-19 vaccine appointments for eligible Albertans begin October 1, 2025.
- Appointments for all other Albertans six months and older who do not qualify for the free vaccine begin October 20, 2025.
- The two COVID-19 vaccines eligible for coverage under your ASEBP benefit plan are Spikevax (Moderna) and Comirnaty (Pfizer).
Step 3: Pay your invoice
- Public health clinics do not direct bill to ASEBP or take payments on-site, so you will not be required to pay at your appointment. Alberta Health Services will mail you an invoice.
- Pay the Alberta Health Services invoice once you receive it in the mail.
- Payment options are at the discretion of Alberta Health Services.
Step 4: Begin the reimbursement process
After your vaccine invoice is paid, request an official receipt by phone from Alberta Health Service that includes:
- Your and your dependants’ full name (request an individual receipt for each person covered by your ASEBP benefit plan)
- Date of service
- Name of vaccine or DIN (Drug Identification Number)
- Quantity
- Name of clinic
- Marked as “paid in full” ($0 balance)
It is important to remember you must call to request this receipt from Alberta Health Services. They will not issue it automatically.

Step 6: Submit your claim
Log into your My ASEBP account and submit the claim:
- Indicate who you are submitting the claim for (you or your dependants).
- Select ‘Drugs’ under ‘What are you claiming’.
- If your plan includes drug coverage, select ‘Extended Health Care’ under ‘How would you like to claim it?’
- Submit the proper receipt(s).
If your plan covers 100 per cent of drug expenses, you will not have to do anything else! If your plan covers less than 100 per cent of drug expenses and you have a Health Spending Account (HSA), you can submit the remaining costs to your HSA provided you have enough funds available.
Option 2: Community Pharmacy
